As part of the Royal Opera House’s ongoing commitment to reach a wider audience, the orchestra can be heard accompanying The Royal Opera and The Royal Ballet in Big Screen events in the UK and cinema screenings transmitted worldwide. In September 2010 the Orchestra took part in The Royal Opera’s acclaimed Japan tour, performing Manon, La traviata and Handel’s Messiah.Īs well as their commitment to the main-stage productions, members of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House play an active role in smaller scale projects and work on many projects with the Royal Opera House's Learning and Participation department. Its performances have included Britten’s War Requiem and Verdi’s Requiem under Pappano in London and Birmingham in 2009, a concert of works by Wagner, Liszt and Bartók in the Vienna Konzerthaus in March 2010, and the chamber version of Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde at Cadogan Hall in February 2011. The Orchestra also regularly plays in concert. The Orchestra plays for nearly all performances given by The Royal Opera and The Royal Ballet on the main stage of the Royal Opera House, under Music Directors Antonio Pappano (The Royal Opera) and Barry Wordsworth (The Royal Ballet). The Orchestra of the Royal Opera House was founded in 1946 on the reopening of the Opera House after World War II.
